Quick answer

To take UPI and card payments through Razorpay, sign up, complete KYC with PAN, bank details and business proof, make sure your website shows policies and contact details, then connect your API keys to your store. Razorpay settles payments to your bank on a regular cycle after deducting its fees; check its site for current rates.

Setting up Razorpay for a small online store takes four steps: create an account, complete KYC with your PAN, bank account and business details, make sure your website shows the policy and contact pages Razorpay checks, and connect your API keys to your store. Once live, shoppers pay by UPI, cards, net banking or wallets, and Razorpay settles the money to your bank account on a regular cycle after deducting its fees. This guide explains each step and the hold-ups that most often delay activation.

Razorpay's requirements and fees change from time to time, so treat this as a plain-language overview and check Razorpay's own website and dashboard for the current details.

Why do I need a payment gateway at all?

A payment gateway is the service that lets shoppers pay on your website and moves the money to your bank. Without one, you are limited to cash on delivery or asking people to send UPI payments to your number and checking screenshots by hand. A gateway confirms each payment automatically, so the order is marked paid, stock updates and the customer gets a confirmation at once. Our guide to UPI, cards or cash on delivery covers how to balance the payment options.

What documents does Razorpay ask for?

The exact list depends on your business type, but expect something like:

Business typeTypical documents
Individual or sole proprietorPAN, Aadhaar or other address proof, bank account details, and business proof such as a GST certificate, shop and establishment licence or Udyam registration
PartnershipFirm PAN, partnership deed, partners' PAN and address proof, business bank account
Private limited or LLPCompany or LLP PAN, certificate of incorporation, directors' or partners' details, business bank account

Use the same name across your PAN, bank account and business documents where you can. Mismatches are a common reason for delays. If you are not yet registered as a business, check with Razorpay what they accept for your category, and see our guide to registrations to start an online business.

What does Razorpay check on my website?

Payment gateways review your website before switching on live payments. They generally look for:

  • products or services with prices clearly shown
  • a contact page with your email, phone and address
  • terms and conditions, privacy policy, shipping or delivery policy, and cancellation and refund policy
  • a business name that matches your KYC
  • products that are allowed under their policies (some categories are restricted)

Every UpMinutes store already has policy pages for shipping, returns, cancellations and refunds, payments, privacy and terms, linked from the footer. Fill in your contact details in store settings and review the policies so they match how you actually work. Our guide to store policies required in India explains what each should say.

How do I connect Razorpay to my UpMinutes store?

  1. In the Razorpay Dashboard, open Account & Settings, then API Keys, and generate a key.
  2. In your UpMinutes dashboard, open Payments under Settings.
  3. Paste the Key ID and Key secret and press Connect Razorpay.
  4. Set up the webhook (recommended), so payments are confirmed even if a shopper closes the page before returning to your store. The Payments page shows the URL to copy into Razorpay.

You can start with Razorpay test keys to place practice orders, then swap in live keys before you start selling. The full steps are in the connect Razorpay help article. Your keys are stored encrypted, and orders are only marked paid after Razorpay's signature is checked.

Once connected, your checkout offers UPI, credit and debit cards, net banking, wallets, and EMI options such as card EMI and pay later where your Razorpay account offers them. The money goes to your bank, not through UpMinutes.

When does the money reach my bank?

Razorpay collects payments and settles them to your bank account on a settlement cycle, usually a few working days after the payment, after deducting its fees and GST on those fees. Your exact cycle is shown in your Razorpay dashboard, and some accounts can choose faster settlement for an extra charge. Weekends and bank holidays can push a settlement to the next working day.

Keep a simple habit: once a week, match settlements in your bank statement with the orders in your store. The payment mix and sales reports in UpMinutes, downloadable as CSV, make this easier.

What fees should I expect?

Razorpay charges a fee per successful transaction, which varies by payment method and plan; GST applies on the fee. Rates for UPI, domestic cards, international cards, EMI and other methods differ. Check Razorpay's pricing page for current rates rather than relying on any figure you read elsewhere.

When you compare platforms, remember the gateway fee applies whichever store builder you use. What differs is whether the platform takes its own cut on top. UpMinutes charges no commission on sales; read transaction fees vs commission for how this compares elsewhere.

What are the common hold-ups, and how do I fix them?

  • Name mismatch between PAN, bank account and business proof. Use consistent documents or explain the difference in your application.
  • Missing policy pages or contact details on the website. Check every footer link works.
  • Website under construction. Add real products and prices before applying for live mode.
  • Restricted category. Some products need extra documents or are not accepted. Check before you build your catalogue around them.
  • Unclear business description. Describe what you sell in plain words.
  • Bank account issues, such as a dormant account or one in a different name.

If activation is taking long, reply promptly to any request from Razorpay's team and keep the website live and complete.

How do refunds and disputes work?

When you refund an online order, the money goes back through Razorpay to the shopper's original payment method. In UpMinutes, choosing "Back to the original payment" on a return sends the refund at once, and it typically reaches the customer in 5 to 7 working days. Razorpay's own rules on whether its fee is returned on refunds are on its website. For cash-on-delivery orders, the customer gives a UPI ID on the return form and you pay them directly. Our guide to refunds and credit notes covers the GST side.

A dispute, or chargeback, is when a cardholder asks their bank to reverse a payment. Razorpay will notify you and ask for evidence. Keep courier tracking, delivery proof and any messages with the customer for every order; they are your best defence.

Can I take payments before activation?

While waiting, you can switch on cash on delivery, which needs no gateway, and take orders. You can also create orders yourself in the dashboard for WhatsApp or phone customers. Once Razorpay is live, you can send payment links for those orders in one tap.

Razorpay setup checklist

  • PAN, bank details and business proof ready, with matching names
  • Website live with products, prices, contact page and policies
  • Razorpay account created and KYC submitted
  • Test keys connected and a practice order placed
  • Live keys and webhook connected
  • Settlement cycle and fees checked in your Razorpay dashboard

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Razorpay without a GST number?

Often yes, using other business proof, depending on your category. Check Razorpay's current requirements and ask a CA whether you need GST registration.

Does UpMinutes hold my sales money?

No. Payments go through your own Razorpay account and Razorpay settles them to your bank account.

Why was my order marked unpaid when the shopper says they paid?

Usually the shopper closed the page before returning to the store. Setting up the Razorpay webhook confirms such payments automatically.

Do I pay Razorpay fees on cash on delivery orders?

No gateway is involved in cash on delivery, so there is no Razorpay fee, but your courier may charge for collecting cash.
