What to expect when you order a bagh made to order: choices, timings, photos and payment.

A made-to-order bagh is the most personal thing we sell, and the process takes about three months. Here is how it works.
It begins with a conversation, in the shop or by video call. We will ask what the bagh is for: a wedding, a gift, a bedcover or a wall. Then you choose three things. The base cloth, usually khaddar in red, maroon, white or indigo. The silk, from about 40 shades we keep, either a single colour for a classic bagh or two or three for a livelier piece. And the pattern, from our book of old designs, or from a family photo if you have one.
We then write a quote with the size, the expected time and the price, which for a full bagh starts at ₹32,000. You pay half when you approve it, and the cloth and silk go to the group best suited to the pattern on our next village visit.
Every fortnight we send you photos of the work. You can see the bagh grow from one corner, and occasionally a maker will add a small mark of her own; ask if you would like her to leave it out. When it is done, we wash, press and check it, and send you a final photo. You pay the balance, and it reaches you in about four days within India, packed in muslin with the maker’s name on the tag.

The two words are used loosely, but they describe different amounts of work. Here is how to tell them apart.
In our experience, much of the phulkari sold today is machine-made. Three quick checks will tell you which you are holding.
