Quick answer

Furniture sells online when buyers can trust size, material and delivery. Give exact dimensions, wood and finish details, photos in a real room, and a delivery charge based on distance or zone. Offer made-to-order pieces as pre-orders with a ship date, and write a clear returns policy for large items before your first order.

Furniture and home décor sell well online when the buyer can picture the piece in their room and trust that it will arrive in one piece. That means exact dimensions, honest material and finish details, photos in a real setting, delivery charges worked out by distance or region, and a clear returns policy for big items. Smaller décor travels easily across the country; large furniture usually works best locally or regionally at first.

What sells best online: furniture or décor?

Both can work, but they behave differently:

Home décor and small furnitureLarge furniture
ExamplesLamps, cushions, wall art, planters, side tables, stools, shelvesSofas, beds, wardrobes, dining sets
DeliveryRegular couriers, pan-IndiaOwn tempo or local transporter; regional at first
PackingBoxes and bubble wrapCorners, blankets, wooden crates for long distances
ReturnsManageableExpensive; agree rules up front
Buying decisionOften quick, giftingConsidered; buyers compare and ask questions

Many furniture makers start online with décor and small pieces that ship easily, and take large orders from nearby cities where they can deliver and install themselves.

What details stop furniture returns?

Most furniture returns come down to "it doesn't fit" or "it isn't what I expected". Prevent both on the product page:

  • Dimensions: width, depth and height in centimetres and inches, plus seat height for chairs and sofas, and the internal size of drawers and wardrobes.
  • Doorway and lift check: "Arrives assembled; needs a door at least 80 cm wide." This one line saves a lot of trouble.
  • Material: the actual wood (sheesham, mango, teak, engineered wood), board thickness, fabric type and foam density if you know it.
  • Finish: natural, honey, walnut; matte or gloss. Mention that natural wood varies in grain and shade.
  • Weight, which matters for moving and for upper floors.
  • Care: how to clean, what to avoid (direct sun, damp walls).
  • Assembly: arrives assembled, partly assembled, or flat-packed with tools; whether you install.

UpMinutes products can have up to three options, such as size, finish and fabric, each with its own price, stock and photo, so a dining table in two sizes and three finishes stays one tidy product page.

How do you price furniture for online buyers?

Online buyers compare quickly, so your price needs to make sense at a glance. Work out your full cost per piece: wood or board, hardware, upholstery, labour, finishing, packing and an allowance for delivery damage. Then decide whether delivery is included in the price or charged separately; for big pieces, charging separately by zone is usually fairer and keeps the product price competitive. If you sell both online and from a showroom, keep prices consistent, or explain any difference (for example, delivery included online). Our guide to pricing your products walks through the maths, and the free margin calculator on the tools page helps you check it.

How should you photograph furniture?

Buyers need two kinds of photo: clean shots that show the piece accurately, and room shots that show scale.

  • Shoot in daylight from a slightly low angle; avoid wide-angle distortion from a phone held too close.
  • Include front, side, back and a close-up of joints, grain and upholstery.
  • Show the piece in a real room with a familiar object for scale: a person sitting, a cup on a table, a book on a shelf.
  • Photograph each finish separately rather than tinting one photo.
  • Add a short video walking around the piece; see product videos with a phone.

Our guide to product photos with a phone covers light and backgrounds in detail.

How should you charge for delivering big items?

A single flat delivery fee rarely works for furniture: you'll either overcharge nearby buyers or lose money on distant ones. Better options, all available as delivery rates in UpMinutes:

  • By distance from your workshop or showroom for local delivery with your own vehicle.
  • By zone (PIN codes, cities, states or regions), with a different rate and delivery estimate for each.
  • By product, giving each large item its own delivery charge, so a bookshelf and a cushion aren't priced the same.
  • Free delivery above an order value, if your margins allow, within a limited zone.

The "Check delivery" box on product pages lets buyers enter their PIN code and see whether you deliver there and roughly how long it takes. For areas you can't serve with large items, simply leave them out of the zone for those products, or say clearly on the page that delivery is limited to certain cities. More on this in delivery charges strategy.

How do you sell made-to-order furniture online?

Much Indian furniture is made to order, which suits online selling well if you're clear about timing. In UpMinutes you can take pre-orders when an item is out of stock, with a note such as "Ships from 20 November". Use this for:

  • pieces made in batches;
  • custom sizes, with a few standard size options plus "Ask on WhatsApp" for anything unusual;
  • seasonal collections ahead of Diwali or the wedding season.

For fully custom work, a catalogue (quote) store with price on request may suit you better than a shop with fixed prices. Buyers send an enquiry with their chosen options and quantity on WhatsApp, and you reply with a quote and a payment link for the advance.

Should you offer EMI on furniture?

Furniture is a considered purchase, and many buyers like to spread the cost. If your Razorpay account offers card EMI or pay-later options, they can appear at checkout. Check your gateway's charges first. Our guide to offering EMI and pay later explains the trade-offs.

What should a furniture returns policy say?

Be generous about damage and honest about change-of-mind:

  • Damage in transit: ask buyers to check the item on delivery and report damage within a set time, with photos. In UpMinutes, customers request returns from their order page with a reason and up to three photos.
  • Wrong item or defect: replace or refund at your cost.
  • Change of mind: for large pieces, many sellers allow this only before dispatch, or charge the return transport. Say which, plainly.
  • Custom pieces: usually not returnable unless faulty. State this before the buyer pays.
  • Refunds: by the original payment method, bank transfer, UPI or store credit.

See our returns and exchange policy guide for wording you can adapt.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell furniture online across India?

Small furniture and décor ship well by courier, but large pieces are costly and risky to move far. Many sellers deliver big items locally or regionally and widen their area as they find reliable transporters.

How do I show different wood finishes on one product?

Use product options such as size, finish and fabric, each with its own price, stock and photo. Photograph each finish separately so buyers see the real colour.

Should I install furniture for customers?

If you deliver locally, offering assembly is a strong reason to buy from you rather than a large marketplace. Say clearly whether it is included or charged separately.

What about GST on furniture?

GST rates depend on the item and its HSN code, so check them with your CA. UpMinutes lets you set the HSN code and GST rate for each product, and the invoice applies them automatically.
