Why we stitch our soles

A glued sole cannot be replaced; a stitched one can be replaced many times. That is the whole difference.

Most shoes sold in India today have soles that are cemented to the upper. They are cheaper to make, light and comfortable at first. When the sole wears through, the shoe is finished.

We use two stitched constructions. Blake stitching sews the sole directly to the upper from inside the shoe; it is slim and flexible, and we use it for loafers. Goodyear welting stitches a strip of leather, the welt, to the upper, and then stitches the sole to the welt. It is heavier and stiffer, but the sole can be replaced four or five times.

A Goodyear-welted pair from us takes three days of work and costs more than a cemented shoe. Over ten years, with two or three resoles, it costs less per year than buying a new cemented pair every eighteen months.

We resole any pair we have made. Send us a photo and we will tell you the cost before you post it.
