Kanchipuram silk or Coimbatore soft silk: which one suits you

Weight, drape, zari and price compared, so you know which silk to ask for before you visit.

Customers often ask us whether they should buy a Kanchipuram silk or a Coimbatore soft silk. Both are pure silk and both are handwoven. The difference is in the yarn, the weight and how the saree is meant to be worn.

A Kanchipuram silk uses three-ply silk yarn and a firm, tightly beaten weave. It holds pleats sharply, stands away from the body a little and usually carries a broad zari border. A typical wedding Kanchipuram weighs 900 g to 1.5 kg and our range starts near ₹12,000 and goes past ₹40,000 for korvai work. It is the saree for a muhurtham, a seemantham or any day that will be photographed.

A Coimbatore soft silk uses finer two-ply yarn and a looser weave. It falls closer to the body, weighs 550 to 750 g and creases less when you sit for long hours. The zari is usually lighter, a thin border or small buttas, so prices sit between ₹6,500 and ₹14,000. It suits receptions, office festivals, travel and anyone who is still getting used to draping silk.

If you can own only one silk this year, think about how often you will wear it. A soft silk will come out of the cupboard four or five times a year. A heavy Kanchipuram may come out twice, but it will be the saree everyone remembers. Many of our customers buy the Kanchipuram for the wedding and a soft silk for every function after it.
