Colour, weight and zari: what to decide first, and what can wait.

Most brides come in with a colour in mind and leave with a different one. That is fine, but it helps to decide a few things in the right order, so the choice does not take five visits.
Start with weight. A muhurtham saree is worn for six to eight hours, often in a hot hall, and then for photographs. A heavy Kanchipuram with a broad zari border can weigh 1.5 kg or more. If the ceremony is in the morning in Coimbatore or Chennai, many brides now choose something nearer 1 kg, and keep the heavier saree for the reception, when the hall is cooler.
Next, think about the zari. Pure zari is silver thread plated with gold; it ages to a warm, soft shine and holds its value. Tested zari is cheaper and brighter, and is fine for a reception saree you will not pass on. We label both clearly.
Colour comes third. Traditional choices such as red, maroon, mustard and green photograph well under stage lights. Pastels look lovely in daylight but can wash out on video. Bring your jewellery, or a photo of it, so you can see the zari and the gold together. The blouse design can wait until the saree is chosen; allow seven days for stitching.
