A chocolate lover’s walk through White Town

The Promenade at dawn, French bakery lanes and our workshop at the end: a slow morning in Puducherry.

Visitors to our shop often ask what else to do in White Town. Our answer is to walk it slowly in the morning, before the heat, and to finish with a tasting with us. Here is the route our team suggests.

Start at the Promenade on Goubert Avenue around 6.30 am, when the road is closed to traffic and the town walks by the sea. Buy filter coffee from a cart and watch the fishing boats come in near the old pier. Then turn inland at the Gandhi statue and walk up Rue Dumas, past the yellow and white French houses with their bougainvillea, to Bharathi Park. The park is shaded and quiet in the morning, with the white pavilion at its centre.

From the park, wander south through Rue Suffren and Rue Romain Rolland. Several small bakeries on these streets sell croissants and pain au chocolat from 7.30 am; try one and you will understand why chocolate fits so naturally in this town. The lanes behind the Notre Dame des Anges church are some of the most photographed in Puducherry, and best before the tourist buses arrive at ten.

We open at 11 am at number 24, Rue Romain Rolland. On Saturdays, the tasting starts at 11 am and lasts 45 minutes; book a day ahead. On other days you can taste any bar at the counter before you buy. By noon the sun is strong, and a cup of our cold drinking chocolate is a good reason to stay inside a little longer.
