Quick answer

To take an existing shop online, start with your best-selling products, not everything. Keep one stock count for counter and website, serve local customers first with pickup and nearby delivery, take phone and WhatsApp orders with payment links, give staff clear roles, and tell walk-in customers about your website. Expand to courier delivery once the routine works.

Taking an existing shop online works best when you start small and local. Put your best-selling 30 to 100 products online first, keep one stock count for the counter and the website, offer pickup and nearby delivery to the customers who already know you, and use the website to take orders that now come by phone and WhatsApp. Once that routine runs smoothly, add courier delivery to the rest of your state, India, or customers abroad.

This guide is for kirana stores, textile and saree shops, gift shops, hardware stores, bakeries and any business that already has a counter and regular customers.

Why should an established shop sell online?

  • Your customers already shop on their phones. Many will order from you if it is easy.
  • It extends your hours. Orders come in after you close and on holidays.
  • It reaches people who moved away, or relatives buying gifts from other cities and countries.
  • It organises the orders you already take on WhatsApp and phone.
  • It protects you against customers drifting to apps that deliver in minutes. See our post on quick commerce and small shops.

Which products should you put online first?

Not everything. Choose products that:

  • Sell steadily at the counter.
  • Have reliable stock from your suppliers.
  • Photograph well and are easy to describe.
  • Travel well, if you plan to deliver.
  • Give you a reasonable margin after packing and delivery.

A saree shop might start with 50 bestsellers across price bands. A kirana store might start with staples and regular household items for local delivery. A gift shop might start with ready hampers. Add more each week once the first set is working.

How do you keep stock right between the counter and the website?

This is the biggest worry for shop owners, and it is manageable with a routine:

  1. One stock count. The website's stock number is the true number for each product.
  2. Record counter sales of online products. Either reduce stock in the dashboard as you sell, or create a counter order so stock updates automatically.
  3. Hold a buffer on fast movers. If you have 10 of a popular item, show 8 online.
  4. Daily check of your top 20 products at closing time.
  5. Keep one-of-a-kind items (a single handloom saree, an antique piece) on a separate shelf once listed, so they are not sold twice.

In UpMinutes you can create orders for counter, phone and WhatsApp sales, so stock, GST and invoices are worked out the same way as website orders, and a stock log shows every change. There is no card machine or POS hardware; you take UPI or cash at the counter as you do now, or send a payment link.

How do you serve local customers first?

OptionHow it worksBest for
Store pickupCustomer orders online and collects; pay online or at pickupBusy regulars, heavy or fragile items
Local delivery by distanceYour own delivery person, charged by kilometres from the shopGroceries, sweets, flowers, cakes
Delivery by PIN codeSet charges for nearby PIN codes or the cityShops serving one city
CourierBook through Shiprocket with trackingCustomers across India

Our guides to store pickup and hyperlocal delivery with your own riders go into detail. A "Check delivery" box on product pages tells customers instantly whether you deliver to their PIN code and how long it takes.

How do you handle phone and WhatsApp orders?

Many regular customers will keep messaging rather than browsing. That is fine. Instead of noting orders on paper:

  1. Create the order in your dashboard with the customer's items and address.
  2. Send a payment link in one tap by WhatsApp, or mark it as cash on delivery.
  3. The order joins the same list as website orders, with an invoice and stock updated.
  4. Gently share your website link for next time: "You can also order here any time."

Our post on selling on WhatsApp and Instagram covers this in more depth.

How do you organise staff for online orders?

Online orders need someone to check, pack and dispatch them every day. Decide who does what:

  • Owner or manager: prices, offers, reports.
  • Counter staff: pickups and counter orders.
  • Packing: a fixed time each day, such as 11 am and 4 pm.
  • Catalogue: new products and photos, perhaps a family member.

UpMinutes has team roles for manager, orders, catalogue and view-only access, with sign-in by one-time email codes and an activity log, so you can see who changed what. Starter includes 2 people, Growth 5 and Pro 15, owner included.

How do you tell walk-in customers about your website?

  • Print the website address on bills, bags and visiting cards.
  • A small standee at the counter with a QR code to your store.
  • Mention it as you bill: "You can order online too; we deliver nearby."
  • Update your Google Business Profile with the website link. See Google Business Profile for shops.
  • Share new arrivals on WhatsApp status with a link.

What about GST and paperwork?

If you are GST registered, your website orders need GST invoices just like counter bills. Set HSN codes and rates per product, and invoices are generated for each order. Online selling across states can change your GST position, so speak to your CA before you start shipping outside your state. Our GST basics explains the general rules.

Which mistakes do shop owners make when going online?

  • Listing everything at once. Hundreds of products with poor photos and wrong stock look worse than fifty done well.
  • Different prices online and at the counter without a clear reason. Regular customers notice. If you charge delivery separately, keep product prices the same.
  • Slow replies. An online order that waits a day for confirmation feels worse than a queue at the counter. Check orders at fixed times.
  • Forgetting the website when busy. Festival rush at the counter is exactly when online stock goes wrong. Plan for it.
  • No photos of the real product. Supplier images look the same as everyone else's. Your own photos show customers it is really your shop.

What does it cost to take a shop online?

Costs come in three parts: the store platform, payment fees, and delivery. UpMinutes plans start at ₹500 a month including GST, with no commission on sales, and yearly plans give two months free. Razorpay charges its own fees on online payments, and courier charges depend on the service you use. Our guide to starting an online store on a small budget breaks the numbers down.

A 30-day plan

  1. Week 1: choose a theme, add your shop details, hours and policies; list 30 bestsellers.
  2. Week 2: set up pickup and local delivery; connect Razorpay; place test orders.
  3. Week 3: tell regular customers; take phone orders through the dashboard.
  4. Week 4: review what sold, fix stock routines, add 30 more products.

You can try all of this on a 14-day free trial of UpMinutes, no card needed.
