Quick answer
Google shows products from many stores free in the Shopping tab and other surfaces. To appear, create a Google Merchant Center account, verify your website, add shipping and returns details, and submit a product feed that updates daily. Clear photos, matching prices and visible policies avoid most disapprovals. No ad spend is needed.
Yes, you can show your products on Google for free. Google's free listings put products from many stores in the Shopping tab and, in places, on Search, Images and YouTube, without any ad spend. To get there, you create a Google Merchant Center account, verify that you own your website, tell Google about your delivery and returns, and give it a product feed: a file listing every product with its price, stock and photo. After a review, your products can start appearing when people search for things you sell.
This guide walks through each step, what Google checks, and how to fix the most common reasons products get rejected.
What are Google Shopping free listings?
When someone searches "cotton kurta for men" or "brass diya set", Google often shows product results with photos, prices and store names. Some of those are paid Shopping ads. Many are free listings, drawn from product information that stores share through Merchant Center. You do not pay per click for free listings; the shopper clicks through to your product page and buys from your store.
Free listings will not replace good SEO or a loyal customer base, but they put your products where people are already comparing options. They work alongside the basics in our SEO guide for the first 90 days.
What do you need before you start?
- Your own website with a checkout. Google wants shoppers to be able to buy on the page they land on.
- Clear policies: returns and refunds, delivery, contact details and terms, easy to find from every page.
- Accurate prices and stock that match what the feed says.
- Good product photos on a clean background, without text, watermarks or borders on the main image.
- Secure checkout over HTTPS.
If your store is new, our guide to trust signals for a new store covers the pages Google and shoppers both look for.
How do you set up Google Merchant Center?
- Create the account at Google Merchant Center with a Google account you will keep (use a business address, not a staff member's personal one).
- Add your business details: name, address, customer service contact.
- Verify and claim your website. Google gives you a code or tag to add to your site. In UpMinutes, you paste the verification code into the SEO settings.
- Set up shipping: where you deliver, how much it costs, and how long it takes. Keep it consistent with your store.
- Set up returns: your return window and conditions, matching your returns policy.
- Add your products through a feed (below).
What is a product feed and how do you add one?
A product feed is a file, usually XML or a spreadsheet, listing each product with its ID, title, description, link, image link, price, availability and brand or identifiers. Typing this by hand for more than a few products is tedious, and it goes stale the moment you change a price.
The better approach is a feed address that updates itself, which Google fetches on a schedule. UpMinutes creates one for every store. Each size or colour is listed as its own item with its own price, sale price, stock and photos. To use it:
- In your dashboard, open Sales channels and copy the Google feed address. The page also flags products missing a photo or with a very short description, which are worth fixing first.
- In Merchant Center, go to Products, Add products, Add from a file, then Scheduled fetch, and paste the address.
- Choose a daily fetch.
Products usually appear after Google's review, which takes a few days. Changes you make in your store reach Google at the next fetch, so within about a day.
The same Sales channels page also gives you a feed for Facebook and Instagram shops. See our post on selling on WhatsApp and Instagram.
Why do products get disapproved, and how do you fix it?
| Problem | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Price mismatch | The page shows a different price from the feed, often after a sale ends | Use a feed that updates daily; avoid hand-edited files |
| Image issues | Text, logos, watermarks or collages on the main photo | Use a clean product photo first; put lifestyle shots second |
| Missing identifiers | Branded products without a GTIN (barcode number) | Add the barcode for branded goods; handmade items usually have none |
| Misrepresentation | Missing contact details, returns policy or business info | Make policies and contact details visible on every page |
| Shipping missing | No delivery settings for India | Add shipping costs and times in Merchant Center |
| Restricted product | Categories Google limits, such as some health products or fireworks | Check Google's Shopping policies for your category |
| Landing page error | Product deleted or link broken | Keep products live, or redirect old addresses |
Merchant Center shows the reason next to each product. Fix the cause in your store rather than in the feed, and the next fetch picks it up.
How do you make your listings stand out?
- Write titles the way people search. "Women's cotton kurta, straight cut, indigo block print" works better than "Neelam". Put the product type first, then key details.
- Write real descriptions. Fabric, size, use, care. Our guide to product descriptions that sell helps.
- Collect reviews. Star ratings can show alongside products in Google. UpMinutes sends review requests after delivery, and reviews are added to your structured data.
- Keep stock accurate. A sold-out product marked in stock wastes the shopper's click and can count against you.
- Show sale prices honestly. Use a real "compare at" price only when the product truly sold at that price.
- Offer free delivery over a threshold if you can; delivery cost is part of what shoppers compare.
Should you also run Google Shopping ads?
Free listings are the place to start. Once your feed is clean and you know which products sell, paid Shopping ads use the same feed to show your products more prominently. Start small, with a daily budget you are comfortable losing while you learn, and watch which products bring orders, not just clicks. Our store analytics guide explains how to read the numbers; UpMinutes connects to Google Analytics 4 alongside its own cookie-free visitor reports.
Does this work for shoppers outside India?
Merchant Center lets you target specific countries, and each country has its own requirements for currency, shipping and language. UpMinutes stores show visitors abroad guide prices in up to 12 currencies but always charge in rupees, so most stores start with India as the target country. If you deliver abroad, read Google's country rules carefully before adding other countries.

Frequently asked questions
Do Google free listings cost anything?
No. Free listings have no fee or cost per click. You only pay if you choose to run Shopping ads as well.
How long until my products appear on Google?
After you add a feed, Google reviews your products, which usually takes a few days. Appearing in results also depends on how well your products match what people search for.
Do I need a GST number for Google Merchant Center?
Merchant Center asks for business details rather than a GSTIN. Whether you need GST registration depends on your business, so check with your CA.
Can a catalogue without online payment use free listings?
Free listings are built for products people can buy on the page, so a working checkout is the safer setup. Check Google's current Shopping policies for your situation.
