A morning on Beach Road, from RK Beach to Kailasagiri

The best of Visakhapatnam’s sea front on foot and by auto, with places to stop for breakfast, a view and a cold glass on the way back.

Beach Road is the reason many people visit Vizag, and the early morning is the best time to see it, before the heat and the traffic. This plan takes about three hours.

Start at RK Beach at 6 am, when the walkers and fishermen are out and the sun is coming up over the Bay of Bengal. Walk north along the promenade past the Kali temple and the war memorial. The submarine museum, set inside a real decommissioned submarine, opens later in the morning, so note it for the way back. It is worth the small ticket.

At the end of the promenade, take an auto up to Kailasagiri, the hill park above the city. The road climbs through cashew and eucalyptus, and from the top you can see the whole curve of the coast, the port and the hills behind. A ropeway also runs from the bottom in the later morning. Walk around the top for an hour.

On the way back, stop at our shop on Beach Road in Pedda Waltair, opposite the stretch where the morning walkers gather. Tender coconut is the obvious choice after a climb in the sun, and sugarcane with ginger and lime is the local favourite. Carry a cap, a refillable water bottle and some cash for autos. The sea along RK Beach has strong currents, so paddle at the edge but do not swim.
