Comfort first: what to check on the inside of a festive outfit before you buy it.

Most festive clothes for children are designed to look good in a photograph and are uncomfortable in every other moment. A child who is itching will not sit still for the puja, the sadya or the family photo.
Turn the garment inside out before you buy it. Look for a full cotton lining under silk, tulle or brocade. Check that the seams at the neck and armholes are bound with soft tape, not left raw. Sequins and beads should sit only on the outer layer, with nothing scratchy behind them.
Next, check the waist. An elastic waist with a drawstring is far kinder than a hook and zip for children under eight, who will be sitting on the floor, running and eating. For boys, a kurta that opens fully at the front is easier than one pulled over the head.
Finally, let your child wear the outfit for an hour at home before the festival. If they forget they are wearing it, you have chosen well. If they keep tugging at it, there is still time to exchange.
