Muslin is open, soft and gets softer with every wash: here is why it suits a Kerala baby.

Newborn skin is thinner than adult skin and loses heat and moisture faster. In Kerala’s humidity, the biggest problem is heat rash, and the fabric next to a baby’s skin makes a real difference.
Muslin is a loosely woven cotton. The open weave lets air move through it, so it dries quickly and does not hold sweat against the skin. We use two layers in our rompers and swaddles, which keeps them soft without making them see-through.
Our muslin is plain cotton, finished without harsh coatings. That means no stiff wrinkle-resistant finishes, which are common in cheaper baby clothes.
Wash new muslin once before the first wear, in cold water with a mild detergent. It will feel a little crisp at first and soften within three or four washes. Avoid fabric softeners, which coat the fibres and reduce how well the fabric breathes.
