Cold water, mild soap and a little starch keep khadi soft and crisp for years.

Khadi gets softer the more you wash it, but the first few washes need some care.
Wash new khadi on its own in cold water with a mild detergent. Hand-spun cotton shrinks by three to four per cent in the first wash, so always wash fabric before you send it to the tailor. Ready-made khadi from us is cut to allow for this.
Dyed khadi, especially natural indigo, may bleed for the first two or three washes. Add a spoon of salt to the first wash and keep it apart from light clothes until the water runs clear.
Dry khadi in the shade. Strong sun yellows undyed cotton and fades natural dyes faster. Iron it while it is still slightly damp, on a medium-high setting.
For a crisp kurta, use a light rice starch after washing. Dissolve two spoons of rice starch in a bucket of water, dip the garment, squeeze gently and dry. It gives khadi the clean, structured look that many people love.
