A family lunch for twelve: what it costs

Meals, extra dishes, parotta and a sweet: a realistic budget for a group of twelve at our Thillai Nagar dining room.

We often get calls from families planning a birthday, a naming ceremony lunch or a visit from relatives, asking what a lunch for twelve would cost. Here is a typical order and its cost at our current menu prices.

Start with banana leaf meals. A vegetarian meal is ₹230 and a non-vegetarian meal, with chicken kuzhambu, mutton gravy and a fish fry, is ₹380. Most families mix them: eight non-vegetarian and four vegetarian meals come to ₹3,960.

Then add the dishes that make it a feast. One nattu kozhi curry at ₹340 and one mutton chukka at ₹380 between four people is the usual measure, so for twelve that is three of each, ₹2,160. A crab masala at ₹420 for the table is a good extra if anyone loves crab. Six parottas with salna, ordered for the children, add ₹270.

Finish with something sweet: paal paniyaram or a payasam at ₹80 a portion, ₹960 for twelve. Buttermilk is included with the meals. The total comes to about ₹7,770, or around ₹650 a head. With GST it is a little over ₹8,150. To save money without losing the occasion, skip the crab, order one fewer chukka, and choose vegetarian meals for older guests who prefer lighter food; the bill drops to around ₹6,700. Reserve at least two days ahead for a group, and tell us about any allergies and anyone observing a fast. We hold the table for 15 minutes.
