Planning a wedding wardrobe in good time

Sherwani, bandhgala, a suit for the reception: what to order, and when, for a winter wedding.

A Delhi wedding season runs from November to February, and our fitting calendar fills up from August. If you are the groom, or close to him, the order of decisions matters.

Start with the main outfit. A sherwani with hand threadwork takes about ten weeks and three fittings, so for a wedding in mid-December you should be measured by the middle of September. Bring a swatch or photo of the bride’s outfit if you want the colours to talk to each other.

Next, the reception. Many grooms choose a velvet or wool bandhgala for the evening, or a dark suit with a dinner shirt. These take six to seven weeks and can be fitted at the same appointments as the sherwani, which saves you trips. Then the smaller functions: a lighter bandhgala or a linen-blend jacket for the mehendi or a daytime pooja, and shirts for the days in between. Shirts are the quickest and can be left until last.

Plan your fittings around your travel. The final fitting should be about two weeks before the first function, with the shoes you will wear. After that, we press everything, pack it in breathable bags and hand it over with a list of what goes with what. Fathers and brothers are welcome at the same appointments.
