Choosing cloth for a Delhi year

From a 2 °C January morning to a 45 °C May afternoon: the weights and weaves that cope with Delhi.

Delhi asks more of a wardrobe than most cities. Winters are cold enough for flannel and tweed, summers hot enough that any jacket feels like too much, and the monsoon brings a damp that wool does not love.

For a single suit that works most of the year, choose a worsted wool between 240 and 270 grams per metre in an open weave such as a tropical or a fresco. It breathes, recovers from creasing overnight and is warm enough for an air-conditioned office in July and a November evening outdoors.

For winter, from late November to February, flannel and heavier worsteds of 300 grams or more feel right, and a tweed jacket comes into its own for the few weeks of real cold. A bandhgala in a wool and mohair blend is a good choice for evening weddings in this season, because it holds its shape through a long night.

For summer, linen and cotton are the honest choice. Linen creases, but a half-lined linen jacket is far cooler than any wool. Some clients prefer a high-twist wool, which stays smart in the heat and is the closest thing to a year-round cloth. At your appointment we hold cloths up to you in daylight by the window, not under shop lights, so the colour you approve is the colour you wear.
