What a month of practice in Mysuru costs

Shala fees, room, food, scooter and the small extras: a realistic monthly budget for a student coming to practise.

Students planning a month in Mysuru often write to ask what the whole trip will cost, not just the shala fees. Here is a typical budget for a single student staying in Gokulam, based on what our travelling students tell us.

The shala fee is ₹7,500 a month for Mysore-style practice, Sunday to Friday, with the led classes included. If you add pranayama and chanting on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, that is ₹2,800 more. A few students take one or two one-to-one sessions at ₹2,200 each, often in the first week.

A furnished room with a small kitchen costs around ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 a month in the busy season, and less from June to September. Food is the most variable cost. Eating mostly at local eateries and cooking breakfast at home, students spend about ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 a month; eating at cafés every day easily doubles that. A rented scooter is ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 a month, and fuel about ₹800.

Add a SIM card and data, laundry, about ₹1,500 a month, and the small extras: tender coconuts, a weekend trip to Srirangapatna or the Chamundi Hill steps, a yoga mat if you did not bring one. All together, a month of practice in Mysuru usually costs ₹40,000 to ₹55,000 excluding travel to the city. Students who share an apartment and cook most meals spend closer to ₹35,000. Pay the shala fee at the start of the month, by UPI or card.
