Quick answer
Shopify suits Indian brands that need checkout in many currencies, POS hardware across several shops, a specific app from its app store, or an in-house team building a custom storefront. An India-first builder usually fits better when most orders are in India, paid by UPI or cash on delivery, and you want GST invoices without extra apps or per-order fees.
Shopify is the better choice for an Indian brand when you sell heavily abroad and need checkout in many currencies, when you run several physical shops with POS hardware, when you depend on a particular app from its app store, or when you have an in-house development team building a custom storefront. When most of your orders are in India, paid by UPI, cards or cash on delivery, and you want GST invoices and COD rules without extra apps or per-order platform fees, an India-first builder usually costs less and takes less work.
We make UpMinutes, so we have an obvious interest. That is exactly why this post starts with the cases where Shopify wins. Shopify is a trademark of Shopify Inc.; UpMinutes is not affiliated with Shopify.
When is Shopify the better choice?
You sell worldwide and need checkout in many currencies
If a large share of your customers are in the US, UK, Europe or the Gulf and you want them to pay in their own currency, Shopify Markets is built for that and is listed on all Shopify plans. UpMinutes shows shoppers abroad guide prices in up to 12 currencies (including USD, EUR, GBP, AED, SGD and AUD) and your delivery zones can include other countries, but every order is charged in rupees through your Razorpay account. For a brand where overseas buyers are the main market, paying in their own currency can matter. Our guide to international shipping from India covers the logistics either way.
You run several shops with POS hardware
Shopify has a point-of-sale system with hardware for brands running multiple retail counters. UpMinutes has no POS hardware: you can create manual orders for counter, phone and WhatsApp sales and send a payment link, which works for one shop but is not a full retail POS.
You need a specific app from the app store
Shopify has a large app store. If your business depends on one particular app, for example a specialised subscription tool or an integration your warehouse partner requires, that can decide it. UpMinutes has no app store; features are built in. That keeps costs predictable but means you cannot add something that is not there.
You have a development team building a custom storefront
Brands with in-house engineers sometimes build their own front end and use the platform only for products, carts and orders. Shopify supports that kind of setup. UpMinutes is designed for owners who want the store, themes and features ready to use, not as a back end for custom code.
When is an India-first builder the better choice?
Most of your orders are in India
Indian shoppers pay mostly by UPI, cards, EMI and cash on delivery. Shopify Payments is not available for businesses in India, so Indian Shopify stores use a third-party provider such as Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree. When you do, Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee on top of the gateway's own fee. UpMinutes connects to your own Razorpay account and takes no commission or transaction fee.
You want GST, COD and Indian delivery handled without apps
On UpMinutes, numbered GST invoices with CGST and SGST or IGST worked out from the shopper's state, HSN per product, cash-on-delivery limits, COD by delivery zone, delivery charges by PIN code and a “Check delivery” box on product pages are built in. On Shopify, COD is offered as a manual payment method, and rules such as COD limits by cart value or PIN code often need an app. Our post on GST invoices built in vs through an app compares the two approaches.
You want predictable costs
Here is a fair cost picture using published prices. UpMinutes prices include GST; Shopify's page does not say whether GST is added, so check.
| UpMinutes | Shopify (India pricing page) | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry plan, monthly | Starter ₹500 (incl. GST) | Basic ₹1,994 |
| Mid plan, monthly | Growth ₹999 (incl. GST) | Grow ₹7,447 |
| Higher plan, monthly | Pro ₹2,000 (incl. GST) | Advanced ₹30,164 |
| Fee on orders paid through Razorpay or similar | None | 2% Basic, 1% Grow, 0.6% Advanced |
| Staff accounts | 2, 5 or 15 people including owner | None extra on Basic, 5 on Grow, 15 on Advanced |
| Free trial | 14 days, no card | 3 days free, then ₹20/month for 3 months |
Shopify prices as listed on shopify.com/in/pricing on 20 October 2026; Shopify also offers lower per-month prices when billed yearly, and Plus starts at ₹1,75,000 a month. Shopify changes prices and offers from time to time, so check Shopify's current pricing. Gateway fees apply on both. You sell in Indian languages
UpMinutes storefronts, checkout, emails and policies come translated in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada as well as English. See how platforms handle Indian languages for what to test on any platform.
What do brands often get wrong when choosing?
- Choosing for a future that may not come. Picking a platform for worldwide selling when almost every order today ships within India means paying for features you are not using yet.
- Comparing plan prices only. The per-order fee and paid apps usually matter more than the subscription once sales grow.
- Ignoring who will run the store. If the person updating products and packing orders is not technical, a setup that needs several apps and settings to handle GST and COD becomes a daily cost in time.
- Not testing checkout on a phone. Place a real test order by UPI and by COD on each platform before deciding.
A quick decision checklist
| If this describes you… | Lean towards |
|---|---|
| Most buyers abroad, paying in their own currency | Shopify |
| Several retail shops needing POS hardware | Shopify |
| Your business relies on one specific Shopify app | Shopify |
| In-house developers building a custom front end | Shopify |
| Mostly Indian orders, UPI and COD | India-first builder |
| You want GST invoices and COD rules with no extra apps | India-first builder |
| You want no per-order platform fee | India-first builder |
| Storefront in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Kannada | India-first builder |
Can you start on one and move later?
Yes. Many brands start on whichever platform fits today and move when the business changes. Moving is easier if you keep clean product data (SKUs, options, photos named sensibly) and set up redirects from old addresses so search rankings carry over. If you are on Shopify now and want to try UpMinutes, the switch guide shows how to import a Shopify product CSV, match photos by SKU and keep your old store running until you are ready. Our step-by-step post on moving from Shopify to UpMinutes goes into detail.
The honest bottom line
Shopify is a strong, mature platform, and for global-first brands, multi-shop retail or teams with developers it can be the right call. For brands whose customers are mainly in India, who want to sell in Indian languages, take UPI and COD with sensible limits, and issue GST invoices without stacking apps and per-order fees, an India-first builder is often simpler and cheaper. Try both with your own products before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Shopify Payments in India?
No. Shopify Payments is not available for businesses in India, so Indian stores use a third-party provider such as Razorpay, and Shopify’s third-party transaction fee applies on top of the gateway fee.
Can UpMinutes take payments in dollars or pounds?
No. Shoppers abroad can see guide prices in up to 12 currencies, but orders are always charged in rupees through your Razorpay account.
Is Shopify good for a small Indian D2C brand?
It can be, especially if you plan to sell abroad or need a particular app. Add up the plan, the third-party transaction fee and any paid apps at your expected sales before deciding.
Will I lose my Google rankings if I switch platforms?
Not if you set up permanent redirects from your old product and page addresses. UpMinutes supports redirects from old Shopify, WooCommerce and WordPress addresses.
