Quick answer
On global store platforms, features Indian sellers need every day, such as GST invoices, COD limits by PIN code, WhatsApp order updates, reviews and delivery checks, often come from separate apps with their own monthly charges. List what you need, check what is built in, and total the app bill before you choose.
The headline plan price is rarely what an Indian online store really pays each month. On platforms built around an app store, the features an Indian seller uses every day, such as GST invoices, cash-on-delivery rules, WhatsApp order updates and PIN-code delivery checks, often come from separate apps, each with its own subscription. Before you choose a platform, list the features you need, check which are built in and which need an app, and add up the full monthly bill.
App stores are not a bad thing. They let a platform serve millions of very different businesses, and some apps are excellent. The problem is only that small charges are easy to overlook when you sign up, and harder to remove later once your store depends on them.
Why do app costs creep up?
Three things tend to happen:
- One need, one app. Each gap is filled with its own app, so five gaps become five subscriptions.
- Usage tiers. Many apps are free up to a number of orders, messages or reviews, then move to a paid tier just as your store starts to grow.
- Dollar pricing. Some apps are priced in US dollars, so the rupee cost moves with the exchange rate and may carry card or forex charges from your bank.
On top of that, every app adds settings to learn, another support desk to contact, and sometimes extra scripts that load on your store pages.
Which features do Indian sellers most often add as apps?
These are the usual suspects. Not every store needs all of them, but most Indian sellers need at least half.
GST invoices
Indian buyers, especially businesses, expect a proper tax invoice with your GSTIN, HSN codes and the right split between CGST and SGST or IGST. Global platforms usually produce a generic receipt, so sellers commonly add an invoicing app. Our guide to built-in vs app GST invoices explains what a compliant invoice needs.
Cash on delivery controls
Turning COD on is often simple. Controlling it is not: a maximum order value for COD, COD only in certain PIN codes, a confirmation step before you ship. On Shopify, for example, COD is a manual payment method, and rules like these often need an app.
WhatsApp and SMS order updates
Indian shoppers check WhatsApp far more than email. Automatic "order confirmed", "shipped" and "out for delivery" messages usually need an app that connects to the WhatsApp Business Platform, and the app's fee is separate from Meta's own message charges.
Delivery checks by PIN code
A "check delivery" box on the product page, delivery charges by zone or weight, and delivery estimates by area are common app purchases.
Reviews, wishlists and back-in-stock alerts
Star ratings that show in Google, review request emails, wishlists and "email me when it's back" are each often a separate app.
Indian-language storefronts
Translation apps are common, and the quality of translated buttons and checkout pages varies.
How do I add up the true monthly cost?
Make a simple sheet with one row per feature you need. For each platform you are considering, note whether it is built in, needs a free app, or needs a paid app, and the monthly price at your expected order volume, not today's.
| Feature you need | Built in? | App needed? | Monthly cost at your volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| GST invoices with HSN | |||
| COD limit and COD by PIN code | |||
| WhatsApp order updates | |||
| Delivery zones and PIN check | |||
| Reviews with Google stars | |||
| Abandoned cart email | |||
| Indian languages | |||
| Gift cards, loyalty points |
Then add the plan price, any percentage the platform takes on sales, and your payment gateway fees. That total is the number to compare. The free profit margin calculator helps you see what each rupee of monthly cost does to your margin per order.
A worked example
Say you run a kurta store taking around 300 orders a month, mostly in India, with plenty of COD. On a global platform you might add an invoice app, a COD rules app, a WhatsApp notifications app, a reviews app and a translation app. Even if each costs what looks like a small amount, five of them can add more each month than the plan itself, and some will move to a higher tier as your orders grow. Plug the real prices from each app's listing into the sheet above; do not guess.
Also check any transaction fee. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so Indian Shopify stores use a third-party provider such as Razorpay, and Shopify's listed third-party transaction fee (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, as on shopify.com/in/pricing on 20 October 2026) applies on top of the gateway's own fee. Shopify changes prices and offers from time to time, so check Shopify's current pricing. We break this down in transaction fees vs commission.
What does UpMinutes include without apps?
UpMinutes has no app store; the features are built in and included in the plan price, with no commission on sales and no app fees. That includes:

- COD on or off, a COD limit, COD allowed or refused per delivery zone, and an optional COD confirmation email
- WhatsApp order updates from your own WhatsApp Business number, and SMS updates on your own DLT templates (WhatsApp and SMS are billed by those services; SMS tracking links are coming soon)
- delivery zones by PIN code, city, state or region, and a "check delivery" box on product pages
- reviews with verified-buyer marks, back-in-stock emails, wishlists, abandoned-cart email, gift cards and loyalty points
- storefronts in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada

When does an app store make sense?
If you need something very specific, such as a niche integration, a custom product builder or a tool your team already depends on, a large app store is genuinely useful. That is one of the reasons Shopify can be the better choice for some businesses, which we cover on UpMinutes vs Shopify. The point is simply to choose with the full cost in front of you.
Checklist before you commit to a platform

- Price paid apps at the order volume you expect in twelve months.
- Note which apps charge in dollars.
- Add plan price, any sales percentage and gateway fees.
- Run a test order with COD and UPI, and download the invoice, during the free trial.

Frequently asked questions
Are apps on store platforms always paid?
No. Many apps have a free tier, but it is often limited by orders, messages or features. Check the price at the volume you expect next year, not just today.
Do WhatsApp order updates cost money even when built in?
Yes. WhatsApp Business messages are billed by Meta whichever platform you use. A built-in feature only saves you the separate app subscription.
Can I remove an app later if I stop needing it?
Usually yes, but check what happens to the data it stored, such as reviews or invoices, and whether it left code in your theme.
