Quick answer

Most small stores do not need a separate app. An installable web app, or PWA, lets customers add your store to their phone's home screen with your icon and name, and it opens full screen like an app, with no app store and nothing extra to build. A native app makes sense only for very frequent buyers.

For most small and growing stores, the answer to "do you have an app?" can be "yes, add us to your home screen". An installable web app, also called a progressive web app or PWA, lets customers put your store on their phone's home screen with your icon and name. It opens full screen, like an app, without an app store listing, a large download or a separate thing for you to build and maintain. A full native app is worth considering only when customers buy from you very often and you have the budget to build and look after it.

What is an installable web app (PWA)?

A PWA is a website built so that phones can treat it like an app. When a customer installs it:

  • Your icon and store name appear on their home screen, next to their other apps.
  • Tapping it opens your store full screen, without the browser's address bar.
  • It is always up to date, because it is your live website.
  • It takes very little storage compared with a typical app.

To the customer, it looks and feels like your app. To you, it is just your store.

Do you really need an app for your business?

Ask yourself honestly:

  • How often do customers buy? Weekly groceries, daily milk or a café order might justify an app. A saree shop or furniture store, where customers buy a few times a year, rarely does.
  • Will customers install it? Many people are reluctant to install apps for one shop, especially on phones with limited storage.
  • Who will maintain it? Native apps need updates for new phone software, store reviews and bug fixes.
  • What do you want an app to do that your website cannot?

For most small businesses, a fast mobile website that can be installed covers what customers actually want: quick access, easy reordering and a familiar icon.

How do customers add your store to their home screen?

The steps vary a little by phone and browser, so it helps to show customers how:

On Android (Chrome)

  1. Open your store in Chrome.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Tap "Install app" or "Add to Home screen".
  4. Confirm. Your icon appears on the home screen.

On iPhone (Safari)

  1. Open your store in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Tap "Add to Home Screen".
  4. Confirm the name and tap Add.

Menu wording changes with phone and browser updates, so check on your own phone before you write instructions for customers.

How do you get customers to install your store?

  • Tell them. A line in the footer and on your About page: "Add us to your home screen for one-tap ordering".
  • Show a short how-to image or 10-second video for Android and iPhone.
  • Mention it at the right moment: in the order confirmation, or when a customer orders a second time.
  • Share on WhatsApp status: "Our shop is now an app on your phone, no download needed."
  • At the counter: if you have a shop, a small standee with your store's QR code and the steps.

Does UpMinutes make my store installable?

Yes. Every UpMinutes store is installable on phones like an app. Shoppers add your store to their phone with your icon and name, and it opens full screen. There is nothing to build or submit to an app store. Your products, prices and offers are always the same as on your website, because it is your website.

UpMinutes does not build native Android or iPhone apps. If you decide you need one later, a developer can build it separately, but most stores never need to.

What makes an installed store pleasant to use?

An installed store is only as good as the store itself. The same things that make a mobile site work make an installed one feel like a real app:

What can an installed web app not do?

It is worth being clear about the limits, so you set the right expectations with customers and staff:

  • No app store listing. People find it through your website, Google, WhatsApp and Instagram, not by searching the Play Store.
  • Fewer deep phone features. Things like background location tracking or complex offline use are the territory of native apps.
  • It needs a connection to shop. Customers browse and order online, as with your website.
  • Install prompts differ by phone. Some browsers offer to install automatically; others need the customer to use the menu.

For buying from a shop, none of these usually matter. What customers want is to find you in one tap and check out quickly.

What about order updates without an app?

One reason businesses want an app is to keep customers informed. You can do that without one. UpMinutes sends order updates (confirmed, shipped, out for delivery, delivered) from your own WhatsApp Business number, plus emails, and SMS updates through your own approved templates. Customers get the information where they already look, without installing anything. Our guide to order tracking updates covers what to send and when.

When is a native app worth it?

A native app may make sense if:

  • Customers order very frequently, such as daily or weekly.
  • You need deep phone features, such as scanning, background location or complex offline use.
  • You have a large, loyal customer base that asks for one.
  • You have the budget and a developer or agency for ongoing updates.

Even then, many businesses start with an installable web app, see how many customers use it, and decide later.

Quick summary

  • Most small stores do not need a native app.
  • An installable web app puts your icon on customers' home screens and opens full screen.
  • Tell customers how to install it, in simple steps for Android and iPhone.
  • Make the store fast and easy on a phone; that is what makes it feel like an app.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PWA the same as an app?

To the customer it looks similar: an icon on the home screen that opens full screen. Technically it is your website, so it does not come from an app store and updates instantly.

Can customers on iPhone install a PWA?

Yes. In Safari they tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. The wording may change with iPhone updates, so check before writing instructions.

Will my store app appear on the Play Store?

An installable web app is added from your website, not the Play Store. If you need an app store listing, you would need a separate native app.

Does an installed store use a lot of phone storage?

No. It uses much less space than a typical app, because it loads your live website rather than a large download.
