Instagram shop or your own website? Why serious sellers need both

Instagram shop vs website: Instagram brings attention, your own store brings orders you control. How the two work together and when to add a proper store.

Quick answer

Instagram is where people discover you; your own website is where they can buy without waiting for a DM reply. Instagram alone means manual payments, lost orders and an account you do not control. Keep posting on Instagram, and send buyers to a store with stock, checkout, UPI, COD and order tracking.

If you sell on Instagram, you probably do need a website, but not instead of Instagram. Instagram is excellent at getting attention: Reels, stories and the explore page put your products in front of people who have never heard of you. Your own website is where those people can buy at any hour, pay by UPI or cash on delivery, and get updates without waiting for you to reply to a DM. Serious sellers use both, each for what it does well.

What does Instagram do well for sellers?

  • Discovery. Reels and hashtags reach people who are not following you yet.
  • Trust through faces. Seeing the maker, the packing table and real customers wearing your products builds confidence.
  • Conversation. DMs and comments let shoppers ask questions in their own words.
  • Low cost to start. A phone and good light is enough to begin.

Our guide to Instagram Reels for product sellers covers the content side in detail.

Where does selling only through DMs break down?

Most DM sellers hit the same walls once orders pick up:

  • Every sale needs you awake. "Price?" at 11 pm becomes a lost sale if you reply at 9 am.
  • Payments are manual. Screenshots of UPI payments, matching them to orders, chasing people who said they paid.
  • Stock gets muddled. Two people are promised the last blue kurta.
  • No order history. Addresses, sizes and payment status live across chats and notebooks.
  • No invoices. Business buyers and gift buyers often want one.
  • You do not own the account. If your account is restricted, hacked or the algorithm shifts, your shop disappears overnight.

What does your own website add?

A proper online store fixes those problems one by one. Shoppers see the price, size options and stock, pay by UPI, card or cash on delivery, and get an order confirmation automatically. You get every order in one list with address, items and payment status, and a GST invoice if you are registered.

Your website also keeps working for you on Google. Product pages with good titles and descriptions can be found in search long after an Instagram post has sunk. And you build an email list and customer history you own, which no platform can take away.

There are three simple connections.

1. A shop link in your bio

Put your store address in your bio and in every story with a link sticker. Send people to a specific collection, not just the home page, so "Shop the Diwali edit" lands on the Diwali edit.

2. A product catalogue for Instagram and Facebook

On Meta's platforms you can tag products in posts and Reels once you have a catalogue. UpMinutes creates a catalogue feed that updates itself as you change prices and stock, which you can use for Shops and product tags on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. Availability of shopping features depends on Meta's own rules for your account and country.

3. Reply to DMs with product links

Keep chatting with people; it is one of Instagram's strengths. But end the chat with a link to the product page, so they can pick a size and pay by themselves. For orders you agree on WhatsApp or the phone, UpMinutes lets you create the order in the dashboard and send a Razorpay payment link in one tap, with stock and the GST invoice handled for you.

Our guide to selling on WhatsApp and Instagram has message templates for each of these.

When is it time to add a proper store?

You are probably ready if two or more of these are true:

  • you get more than a handful of orders a week from DMs
  • you have missed sales because you could not reply fast enough
  • you have more than about 20 products, or products in several sizes and colours
  • customers ask "do you have a website?" or "is COD available?"
  • you want to sell to people outside your followers, including through Google
  • you have had a payment or address mix-up in the last month

What should my first website include?

Keep it simple. You do not need hundreds of pages:

  • your best 20 to 50 products with clear photos, prices and sizes
  • UPI and card payments, and COD with a limit if your customers expect it
  • shipping, returns and contact pages, so first-time buyers trust you
  • a WhatsApp chat button, so the conversational feel of Instagram is not lost
  • your story and the same look as your Instagram, so followers recognise you

UpMinutes has 150 themes with live demos, and the launch checklist walks you through everything before you go live.

What about a WhatsApp catalogue instead?

A WhatsApp Business catalogue is a useful middle step, and many sellers use one. It still relies on chat to complete the sale and has no checkout of its own. We compare the two in WhatsApp catalogue vs online store.

What does adding a store cost?

Less than most Instagram sellers expect. UpMinutes plans start at ₹500 a month including GST on Starter, with up to 100 products, and ₹999 on Growth with up to 300 products and all themes. There is no commission on your sales; Razorpay charges its own fee on online payments, as any payment gateway does. You get a free address like yourbrand.upminutes.com, or you can connect your own domain. There is a 14-day free trial with no card needed, so you can build the store, place a test order and decide before you pay anything.

Compare that with the time you spend today matching UPI screenshots to orders and copying addresses out of chats. For most sellers past a few orders a week, the hours saved are worth more than the plan. Full details are on the pricing page.

A simple weekly routine for both

  • Three times a week: post a Reel or carousel showing a product in use, with the product link in a story the same day.
  • Daily: reply to DMs and comments, ending with a product link.
  • Weekly: check which products got the most visits on your store and feature them on Instagram.
  • Monthly: send an email to your store subscribers with new arrivals.

Instagram keeps people interested. Your store turns that interest into orders you can track, ship and repeat. For a wider comparison of selling channels, see how UpMinutes compares with a global platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell on Instagram without a website?

Yes, many sellers start that way using DMs and UPI. It becomes hard to manage once orders grow, and you depend entirely on an account you do not control.

Will a website reduce my Instagram sales?

Usually not. Instagram still brings people in; the website just makes it easier for them to finish buying without waiting for a reply.

Do I need a GST number to have a website?

Not to have a website. Whether you need GST registration to sell online depends on your situation, so check with a CA before you start selling.

Should my Instagram and website look the same?

Yes, as far as possible. Using the same name, logo, colours and photo style helps followers trust that the website is really you.
