Getting lunch to OMR: our delivery routes in south Chennai

Six riders, three routes and a lot of traffic signals: how lunch travels from Adyar to Perungudi on time.

Our kitchen is in Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, and every lunch we cook travels on one of six two-wheeler routes. Knowing how they run helps if you are deciding whether to subscribe from your home or your office.

The Adyar and Besant Nagar route is the shortest. It covers the streets around Gandhi Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Indira Nagar and Besant Nagar up to the beach road. Riders on this route usually deliver between 12 and 12.30 pm, so it suits people working from home or students who come home for lunch.

The Kotturpuram and Velachery route crosses the Adyar river and goes west, through Kotturpuram and Gandhi Mandapam Road, and down towards Velachery. Traffic near the Velachery main road can be slow, so we leave this route at 11.40 for delivery between 12.20 and 12.50.

The OMR route is the longest. Two riders cover Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani and the office campuses on Rajiv Gandhi Salai up to Perungudi. They leave first, at 11.30, and most offices receive lunch between 12.30 and 1 pm. Large campuses have security desks where riders cannot go upstairs, so we ask OMR subscribers to give us a desk name and floor, or to collect from the lobby. When several people in one office subscribe, we deliver as one group, which speeds things up. If you are just outside our area, in Sholinganallur or Guindy for example, ask anyway; we add streets when there are five or more subscribers close together.
