Why the cupboards should be drawn first, and how to count what you own.

Most people start a new home by thinking about sofas and paint colours. We start with storage. In an Indian home, storage decides whether rooms stay calm or fill up with boxes, and it is much harder to add later.
Before the first design meeting, we ask clients to walk through their current home and count: how many sarees and suits, how many pairs of shoes, how many suitcases, how much puja material, how many steel dabbas and pressure cookers. It sounds tedious, but it turns into drawings very quickly.
With those numbers, we can size each wardrobe, plan lofts for suitcases and seasonal bedding, and decide where the shoe rack goes so it is not in the living room. A 3 BHK usually needs storage on every wall that is not a window or a door.
Only then do we place the furniture. A room with good built-in storage needs less loose furniture, which makes it feel bigger. Clients are often surprised that their new home has fewer pieces than the old one, and feels far more spacious.
