What happens at a dental check-up

Thirty minutes, an X-ray if needed, and a plan you can take home.

Many patients come to us only when something hurts, often because they are not sure what a routine check-up involves. Here is what happens at Smitrekha.

First, we ask about any pain, sensitivity or bleeding, your medical history and any medicines you take. Some medicines, such as blood thinners, change how we plan treatment, so please bring a list.

The dentist then examines every tooth with a mirror and probe, checks your gums for pockets, and looks at your bite and the soft tissues of your mouth. If we need to see between teeth or below fillings, we take a digital X-ray. It uses a very low dose and the image appears on the screen in seconds.

We then turn the screen towards you and go through what we found, tooth by tooth. You leave with a written plan that separates what needs attention now, what can wait, and what we simply want to watch. Each item has a fee.

Nothing is done on the same day unless you choose it. Most patients take the plan home, think about it and book the next visit when it suits them.
