Caring for a kapok pillow

Sun, shade and how to keep the filling plump.

Kapok is the fluffy fibre from the seed pods of the silk-cotton tree. It has filled pillows in Kerala homes for generations, because it is light, cool and does not hold moisture the way cotton wool does.

Over time the fibres pack down, especially at the centre where your head rests. Every few weeks, open a window and leave the pillow in a breezy, shaded spot for an hour. Avoid direct sun for long periods; it can make the fibre brittle.

Give the pillow a firm shake and press it from the edges towards the middle to redistribute the filling. Our covers have a zip, so if you want a higher pillow you can add kapok, which we sell in 250 g bags for ₹180.

Do not wash the filling. Wash the outer pillow cover as often as you like, and the inner cover twice a year after removing the kapok into a clean cloth bag. A well-kept kapok pillow lasts five to seven years, and the filling can then be fluffed and reused.
