How to measure your bed for a new mattress

A five-minute job that saves a lot of trouble.

Most mattress problems we see come from the wrong size: a gap at the foot of the bed where a pillow falls through, or a mattress that bulges because it was squeezed into a frame. Because we make every mattress to order, a good measurement matters.

Take the old mattress off the bed. With a steel tape, measure the inside of the frame, from wood to wood, along the length and the width. Measure in two places each way, because older cots are often not perfectly square. Write down the smaller number.

Next, measure the depth: from the slats or plywood base to the top of the side rail. A mattress should sit at least 5 cm above the rail, so it does not press into your legs when you sit on the edge.

Send us the three numbers on WhatsApp with a photo of the bed. We usually make the mattress 1 cm smaller than the frame on each side so the cover can be zipped on and off. If the frame is unusual, such as a carved cot with curved ends, we may visit to take a paper template.
