Looking after lamps in the monsoon

Humidity, salt air and power cuts: how to keep cane, brass and wiring in good shape from June to September.

Mumbai’s monsoon is hard on lamps. The air is close to fully humid for weeks, flats near the sea get salt in the breeze and the power trips more often than at any other time of year. A few habits keep your lights safe and good-looking through it.

Cane and rattan absorb moisture and can grow mould if they stay damp. Dust cane shades weekly with a dry, soft brush, and keep the room ventilated. If you see white or grey spots, wipe them with a cloth barely dampened with diluted white vinegar, then let the lamp burn for an hour to dry the weave. Do not hang cane pendants in bathrooms or right beside a window that stays open in the rain.

Brass darkens faster in humid, salty air. That is natural, and many people like the warm patina it develops. If you prefer it bright, wipe the brass monthly with a dry cloth and polish twice a year with a mild brass cleaner. Our lacquered pieces only need dusting.

Wiring needs most attention. Make sure outdoor and balcony lights are rated for wet places, and never use an indoor lamp on an open balcony. Check that plug points are dry, and turn off lamps at the switch during heavy storms. After a power cut, switch lamps back on one by one, not all at once. If a lamp flickers, buzzes or a holder feels warm, unplug it and send us a message. Our two-year wiring warranty covers faults in holders and cables we fitted.
