How high to hang a pendant

Measurements for dining tables, kitchen islands and double-height rooms.

A pendant hung at the wrong height is the most common lighting mistake we see. Too high and it lights the ceiling instead of the table; too low and people bump their heads or cannot see each other across dinner.

Over a dining table, the bottom of the shade should be 70 to 85 cm above the tabletop. That puts the light below eye level for someone standing and just above eye level for someone seated. For a long table, use two or three pendants spaced evenly, with at least 60 cm between shades.

Over a kitchen island, go a little higher, 80 to 90 cm above the counter, so the shades do not block the view across the kitchen. In a living room with no table beneath, the bottom of the pendant should be at least 210 cm from the floor so a tall guest can walk under it.

Double-height rooms are the exception. A cluster of pendants at different heights, the lowest around 240 cm, fills the volume without feeling like it is floating away. Tell us your ceiling height when you order and we will cut the cables to suit.
