Warm white, cool white: what the numbers mean

Why 2700K is the number to look for on a bulb.

Bulb boxes in India are confusing. You will see words like daylight, cool white and warm white, and numbers like 6500K or 3000K. The number is the colour temperature, measured in kelvin. Lower numbers are warmer and more yellow; higher numbers are cooler and more blue.

Most tube lights and ceiling panels sold in India are 6500K. That is the cold, slightly blue light of an office or a hospital corridor. It is good for reading small print, but it makes skin look grey and rooms feel flat in the evening.

For living rooms and bedrooms, we suggest 2700K. It is close to the light of an old filament bulb and makes wood, fabric and skin look their best. For kitchens and study tables, 3000K to 4000K gives a little more clarity while still feeling homely.

Avoid mixing very different temperatures in one room. A warm table lamp next to a 6500K ceiling panel makes both look wrong. If you cannot replace the ceiling light, try turning it off in the evening and living with lamps instead.
