Layering light in a Mumbai flat

One tube light on the ceiling is not enough. How to combine general, task and accent light in a small home.

Most Mumbai flats are built with one ceiling point per room, often fitted with a tube light or a flat LED panel. It lights everything evenly and flatly, and the room feels like an office after dark. The fix is not a brighter light. It is three kinds of light, each doing a different job.

The first layer is general light, which lets you move around safely. In a living room of about 12 by 14 feet, a single pendant or ceiling fitting with a 12 to 15 W warm LED bulb is usually enough, especially if the walls are pale. Put it on a dimmer if you can, so it can be bright for cleaning and soft in the evening.

The second layer is task light, placed where you read, cook or work. A table lamp beside the sofa, a floor lamp behind the reading chair or a pendant hung low over the dining table. These should be at eye level or below, with a shade that hides the bulb, so the light falls on the page or the plate rather than in your eyes.

The third layer is accent light, which makes a room feel warm. A small lamp on a bookshelf, a wall sconce beside a painting, or a cane pendant in a corner that throws patterns on the wall. In the evening, try switching off the ceiling light entirely and living by the second and third layers. Most of our customers find that is how they want their homes to feel.
