Cataract surgery, step by step

From the first examination to the third follow-up, here is how it works at Kanmani.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. Surgery replaces the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one. Here is how the process runs at our hospital.

It begins with an examination and tests: eye measurements to calculate the power of the new lens, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, and a review of any medicines you take. Your surgeon explains the lens options and fees, and you choose a date.

On the day, you arrive about two hours before surgery. Drops are put in the eye and the area is numbed. The operation itself usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. You are awake, but you will not see the instruments clearly.

You rest for about an hour and go home the same day with a shield and eye drops. We give you a printed sheet with the drop timings in Tamil and English.

Follow-up visits are the next day, after one week and after one month. Glasses, if needed, are prescribed at the last visit, once the eye has settled. If you have any pain, redness or drop in vision between visits, call us at once.
