Choosing three flavours for a party tub

A 2-litre party tub holds three flavours. How to pick a mix that suits children, grandparents and everyone between.

Our 2-litre party tub, from ₹1,650, holds three flavours side by side. Most people order it for a birthday or a Sunday lunch, and most spend longer choosing the flavours than planning the rest of the meal. A simple rule helps: one fruit, one classic, one rich.

The fruit flavour keeps the tub fresh and gives anyone avoiding dairy an option, if you choose a sorbet. In season, that means Alphonso mango from April to June and Mahabaleshwar strawberry sorbet from December to March. In between, ask for the sorbet of the week, which is often chikoo, jamun or sitaphal, depending on what Farah finds at Crawford Market.

The classic is for the older guests. Kesar pista kulfi cannot go in a tub, but our anjeer badam has the same familiar taste and is lower in sugar. Malted milk chocolate is the rich one, and it is the flavour the children will finish first.

For 15 to 20 guests, one party tub with cones and spoons is usually enough after a full meal, at about two small scoops each. For 30, order two tubs and vary the third flavour so the table looks generous. Avoid putting two very similar flavours together, such as pistachio and anjeer badam; guests will not notice the difference. Order by noon the day before, and keep the tub in the coldest part of the freezer until about ten minutes before serving.
