A Bandra evening walk that ends with a scoop

From Mount Mary to Bandstand and back through the lanes of Ranwar: a two-hour walk with our shop on Chapel Road at the end.

Bandra West is best seen on foot in the hour before sunset, when the sea breeze picks up and the lanes are full of people heading home. This route takes about two hours at an easy pace and finishes, conveniently, near our shop.

Start at the steps of Mount Mary Basilica on the hill, around 5 pm. The view over the sea from the terrace is worth the climb. Walk down the hill to Bandstand promenade and follow the sea wall south. Fort Castella, the ruined Portuguese watchtower at the end, is a good spot to watch the sun go down over the Sea Link.

From Bandstand, turn inland into Chimbai and then Ranwar village. These are the old East Indian neighbourhoods of Bandra: narrow lanes, cottages with wooden balconies and blue and yellow walls, and small crosses at the corners. Please walk quietly here. People live in these homes, and the murals on their walls are part of their street, not a photo studio.

From Ranwar it is ten minutes to Chapel Road and our shop at number 27. We are open until 11.30 pm, so there is no hurry. In the hot months, a scoop of mango or strawberry sorbet after the walk is hard to beat. If you are driving, park near Mount Mary; parking near Chapel Road is difficult after 7 pm.
