Watches for the wedding season

From the groom’s watch to the trousseau gift, how families in Mumbai choose watches between November and February.

From November to February, a large part of our counter is taken up by wedding families. The watch is still one of the most common gifts from the bride’s family to the groom, and one of the most common things a couple buys for each other.

For the groom, we usually suggest something that will be worn long after the reception. A steel automatic with a plain dial, between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000, suits a sherwani on the day and a work shirt on Monday. If the family prefers gold tones, choose a slim case that will not compete with a heavy kada or rings.

For the bride, small round watches of 26 to 32 mm on a mesh or link bracelet are popular because they sit beside bangles without scratching them. Ask us to size the bracelet a little loose; wrists swell in the heat of a long ceremony.

Pocket watches have come back as a gift for grooms and for fathers of the couple. An engraved hunter cover with the wedding date takes us two days, from ₹600, so order at least a week before the muhurtham. Last, think about timing. Bracelets need sizing and engraving needs a day or two, and our benches are busiest in the first week of December. Come in October or early November if you can, and bring the outfit photos.
