What really happens in a glycolic peel

A plain walk through the 45 minutes, from patch test to the week after.

Glycolic acid comes from sugar cane. In the low strengths we use, it loosens the top layer of dead skin cells so they shed more evenly. That is all a spa peel does; it is not a treatment for skin conditions.

First, a patch test behind the ear or on the jaw, at least 48 hours before. On the day, your therapist cleanses and dries the skin, protects the corners of the nose, eyes and lips with a balm, and brushes the peel on in thin layers. You will feel warmth or a light tingle. We time it to the minute, usually three to five, then neutralise and apply a calming mask.

For the next week, skip scrubs, retinol and waxing on the face, and wear sunscreen every time you step out. Some guests see light flaking around day three; let it go and do not pick.

We stop or postpone a peel if your skin is sunburnt, freshly waxed, broken or very sensitive that day. A facial will be booked instead, at no extra charge.
