Oiling your hair the old way

Why a warm champi helps you relax, and how to do it well at home between visits.

Most of us grew up with a grandmother’s Sunday oil massage. It was never only about hair. The slow pressure on the scalp, neck and shoulders is one of the most relaxing things you can do in half an hour.

Warm the oil gently by placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water for five minutes; never microwave it. Coconut oil suits most hair in Hyderabad’s heat; sesame feels heavier and warmer and many prefer it in the cool months. Use about two tablespoons for shoulder-length hair.

Part your hair in sections and work the oil into the scalp with your fingertips, not your nails, in small circles. Spend more time at the crown and behind the ears. Then press along the neck and squeeze the tops of the shoulders.

Leave it in for at least an hour, or overnight with an old towel on the pillow. Wash with a mild shampoo twice; one wash rarely clears the oil. If your scalp is oily or prone to flakes, oil less often, once every ten days is enough.
