No, a facial will not make you fairer

Many guests still ask for a facial to lighten their skin. Why we do not offer that, and what a facial can honestly do.

At least a few times a week, a guest asks us for a facial that will make her skin fairer, often before a wedding. Sometimes it is a mother booking for her daughter. We understand where the question comes from. We still say no, and here is why.

The colour of your skin comes from melanin, which is set by your genes and your exposure to the sun. A facial does not change it. Products that claim to lighten skin quickly sometimes contain strong bleaching agents or steroids that can harm skin over time, and we do not use them. A facial that promises to make you fairer is either not telling the truth or using something we would not put on anyone’s face.

What a facial can do is more modest. Cleansing, gentle exfoliation and hydration can make skin look fresher, smoother and more even in the days after. A face massage can make you look rested because you are rested. Regular sunscreen will do more to protect your natural tone than any single treatment. If you are concerned about patches of pigmentation, please see a dermatologist; we are happy to work alongside their advice.

We would also gently say this: your skin colour is not a problem to be fixed. Our therapists come from across India and so do our guests. We would rather help you feel rested and comfortable in your own skin.
