Washing machine care in hard water

Madurai’s borewell water leaves scale inside drums and heaters. Five habits that keep a washer running well.

Many homes in Madurai depend on borewell water, which is hard: it carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Over months, this leaves white scale inside the drum, on the heater of front-load machines and in the detergent drawer. Scale makes detergent work less well, leaves clothes stiff and can shorten the life of the heater. A few habits help a great deal.

Use the right detergent, in the right amount. Front-load machines need low-foam detergent made for them. In hard water, you may need a little more than the packet suggests, but too much leaves residue in clothes and the drum. Start with the recommended dose and adjust until clothes rinse clean.

Run a drum-clean cycle once a month. Most machines have a programme for this. Run it empty with a cup of white vinegar or a descaling powder in the drum. For front loaders, leave the door and the detergent drawer slightly open after each wash so the drum dries and does not smell.

Clean the filter. Front loaders have a small drain filter behind a flap at the bottom front. Every month, put a shallow tray under it, open it slowly and remove coins, hair and lint. Top loaders have a lint filter inside the drum that needs a rinse every few washes. If your water is very hard, consider a softener or a filter on the inlet line. Our technicians can test your water during a service visit and tell you whether it is worth it. Scale on the heater is not covered by warranty, so prevention is cheaper than repair.
