Choosing a washing machine size

For most families of four, 7 kg is enough; here is how to work it out for yours.

Washing machine size is measured in the dry weight of clothes it can take in one load. A bigger machine is not always better: it costs more, takes more space and uses more water when half full.

A rough guide we use on the shop floor is 1.5 kg per person per day of clothes. A couple manages well with 6 kg, a family of four with 7 kg, and a family of five or six with 8 kg. If you wash bedsheets and blankets at home, add a kilogram.

Front-load or top-load is the next question. Front-loaders use less water, wash more gently and can heat water for a hot wash, which helps with towels and uniforms. Top-loaders are quicker and easier on the back. In Madurai’s hard water, a front-loader with a hot wash also keeps whites whiter.

Finally, measure the space, including the door swing and the drain. Our free home visit does this for you, and we will tell you whether the floor needs a stand to keep the machine level.

Why we recommend BLDC fans

They draw about a third of the power of an old fan and run longer on an inverter.
