How to size an AC for your room
Tonnage depends on room area, sunlight and the floor you live on.
The most common AC mistake we see is a machine that is too small for the room. It runs at full power all afternoon and still does not cool.
Start with the floor area. As a guide, a 1 ton AC suits rooms up to 120 sq ft, 1.5 ton up to 180 sq ft and 2 ton up to 240 sq ft. Then adjust for Madurai’s sun: a west-facing room, a top floor under a concrete roof or a room with large windows needs the next size up.
Inverter ACs are worth the extra cost if you run the AC for more than four hours a day. They slow down instead of switching off and on, which saves power and keeps the room steadier. A 5-star inverter model can cost ₹700 to ₹1,000 less a month to run in summer than an old fixed-speed AC.
Installation matters as much as the machine. The outdoor unit needs shade and airflow, and the pipe should be as short as possible. Our fitters check both before they drill.
