Getting your AC ready before the Madurai summer

A service in March, a clean filter every fortnight and the right temperature setting: how to prepare for April and May.

Madurai’s summer arrives early. By late March the afternoons cross 38 °C, and in April and May many days reach 40 °C or more. Every year, our service team receives three times as many calls in the first hot week as in the whole of February, and waits stretch to several days. The best time to prepare your air conditioner is before the heat comes.

Book a service in late February or early March. Our technician cleans the indoor coil and filters, washes the outdoor unit, checks the gas pressure and the drain pipe, and tests the remote and the stabiliser. A split AC service costs ₹600 and takes about an hour. An AC that has stood unused through the winter often has dust, insects or a blocked drain that only shows up when it runs for hours.

Through the summer, clean the indoor filter every two weeks. It slides out from under the front panel and can be washed under a tap and dried in the shade. A clogged filter makes the AC run longer and cool less.

Set the temperature at 24 to 26 °C. Each degree lower adds roughly 6% to the power the AC draws, and the room rarely feels much cooler. Use the ceiling fan at low speed with the AC to spread cool air, keep curtains drawn on the sunny side in the afternoon and close the door. If the outdoor unit sits on a west-facing wall, a simple shade above it, not touching it, helps it work less in the late afternoon.
