Cakes or rockets: choosing for your space

Why a 30-shot cake and a box of rockets suit very different terraces, streets and grounds, and how to combine them.

Customers who are new to aerial fireworks often ask whether they should buy cakes or rockets. Both put colour in the sky, but they behave very differently on the ground, and the space you have should decide.

A cake is a block of tubes that fires one after another from a fixed spot. You light it once and it runs on its own, from 35 seconds for a 12-shot to seven minutes for our 240-shot. Because it stays put, the show is predictable: the bursts go up in the same place, and the debris falls in a rough circle around it. Cakes suit streets and grounds where you can keep people back by a set distance.

A rocket is lit one at a time from a bottle or a stand, and flies on a stick. Our whistling rockets climb about 40 m with a whistle and burst once; the lunik colour rockets add a crackling tail. Rockets are cheap, ₹340 to ₹420 for ten, and children enjoy the countdown. But each one drifts with the wind, and the empty stick comes down somewhere you cannot predict. They need a wide open ground with no houses or thatch downwind.

In a narrow Madurai street lined with houses, we almost always suggest cakes over rockets. On a large temple ground or a farm, a mix works well: a few rockets to gather the crowd, then cakes for the main show. A terrace in a dense neighbourhood suits small cakes only, a 12 or 30-shot. Our free show plan looks at your space and tells you which to choose.
