Cold mornings, slow shuttles and why we change shuttle speed in December.

Lucknow winters change badminton in a way that surprises new players. From mid-December to the end of January, the hall can be 10 degrees at 6 am. Cold air is denser, and feather shuttles fly slower and drop shorter.
That is why shuttles come in speeds, marked on the tube, usually 76, 77 and 78. Higher numbers fly faster. In the summer months we use 76 or 77. In December and January, the morning batches switch to 78 so that a full clear still reaches the back line. Players who buy their own shuttles should do the same.
Cold muscles also need longer to warm up. In winter our coaches add five minutes of running and dynamic stretches before any smash or jump. Wear a track jacket until you are warm, and keep it on between games.
Fog sometimes delays players in the morning, so we keep the cancellation rule relaxed on foggy days. If the city is under heavy fog before 6 am, you can move a morning court booking to the evening without a charge. The hall itself does not close in winter. Some of our regulars say January mornings are the best time to play, once the shuttles fly true.
