Cuff size, display, memory and battery: what to check before you buy a device for an older parent.

Home health devices are among the most-asked-about items at our counter, often by someone buying for a parent. A good choice is one that the person will actually use and can read easily.
For blood pressure, we suggest an upper-arm monitor rather than a wrist one, because readings from the upper arm are usually more consistent at home. The most important thing is the cuff size. Our digital BP monitor at ₹1,850 has a cuff for arms from 22 to 42 cm around, which suits most adults; measure around the middle of the upper arm before buying. A cuff that is too small or too loose gives readings that are not useful. Look for large digits on the screen, a simple single-button start and a memory that stores at least 60 readings, so the doctor can see a pattern.
A fingertip pulse oximeter, ₹1,150 with us, measures oxygen saturation and pulse. Choose one with a bright OLED display that turns, so it can be read from either side, and a clip that fits snugly without pinching. Readings can be affected by cold fingers, nail polish and movement, so sit still and warm the hands first.
Both devices need fresh batteries; we include them and suggest keeping a spare set. Unopened devices can be returned within seven days. When you buy, our pharmacist will show you how to use it at the counter, and we can do the first reading together. Neither device replaces a check-up; take the readings to your doctor.
