Hatha or vinyasa: which class to book first

Both use the same postures. The pace, the breath and the room feel very different. How to choose.

Our two most-booked classes are beginner hatha and vinyasa flow. On the timetable they look similar: sixty minutes, a mat, a teacher. In the room they feel quite different.

In hatha, each posture is entered slowly and held for five to eight breaths, sometimes longer. The teacher explains alignment as you go, there are pauses between postures, and the class ends with a long rest. It suits people who are new, who like to understand what they are doing, or who are coming back after a long break. Our 6 am and 6 pm hatha classes at ₹450 are where most new students begin.

Vinyasa links postures together with the breath, one movement for each inhale or exhale, so the class flows without stopping. It is warmer and faster, with more repetitions of sun salutations, and the teacher gives fewer explanations because the sequence keeps moving. It costs ₹500 a class and is listed as all levels, but it helps to know the basic postures first.

A simple rule: if you have never practised, or have not for a year or more, take four to six hatha classes first. If you already know a downward dog from a plank and enjoy a class that feels like movement more than stillness, try vinyasa. Many of our members do both, hatha on weekdays and a vinyasa flow on Saturday morning. Your teacher will tell you honestly which suits you after a few weeks.
