Sunglasses for a Hyderabad summer

Polarised, tinted or photochromic: choosing sunglasses for 42 °C days, two-wheelers and glare off the road.

From March to June, Hyderabad’s afternoon sun is harsh, and glare off concrete, car windscreens and the Hussain Sagar water is tiring for the eyes. Good sunglasses make long days outside more comfortable, and they also shield the eyes from ultraviolet light.

The first thing to check is UV400 on the label. It means the lenses block ultraviolet light up to 400 nanometres. Darkness alone tells you nothing; a very dark lens without UV protection can be worse, because your pupils open wider behind it.

Polarised lenses cut reflected glare from roads, water and car bonnets. They suit drivers and riders, and anyone near water. They can make some phone screens and car dashboards look patchy, so try them with your phone before buying. Our hexagonal metal pair at ₹2,490 is polarised grey. Grey lenses keep colours true. Brown and amber lenses add contrast and suit cloudy days and the hills. Green sits between the two. For daily city use, grey or brown is the usual choice.

If you wear glasses, you have three options: prescription sunglasses, clip-ons over your regular frame, or photochromic lenses that darken outdoors. Photochromics darken less behind a car windscreen, so drivers often prefer a separate prescription pair. Prescription sunglasses take about four days in our lab.
