Inside our lens lab: how your glasses are made in two days

From the prescription slip to the final fitting: what happens to your lenses between the test and collection.

Behind the frame wall at Nazar is a small room with three machines and a long white bench. Most single-vision glasses are made here, which is why we can hand them over in two days instead of a week.

It starts with your measurements. After the eye test, we measure the distance between your pupils and the height of each pupil inside the chosen frame. For progressives, these numbers decide where the reading zone sits, so we take them twice. Ravi, who runs the lab, checks every job card against the optometrist’s notes before he begins.

The frame goes into a tracer, which records the exact shape of its rims. Uncut lenses, which arrive round, are marked with their optical centre and fixed to a small holder. The edger then grinds each lens to the traced shape, with a bevel along the edge so it sits in the groove of the frame. Rimless and half-rim frames get a flat edge, a drilled hole or a groove for the nylon thread.

Ravi fits the lenses, checks the power of each one on a lensometer, and confirms the centres line up with the marks. A second person checks the finished pair before it goes in its case. When you collect, we adjust the temples and nose pads on your face. Progressives and high powers come from a partner lab and take five to seven days.
