Taking a green crackers plan to your apartment association

How Bengaluru residents can agree on a courtyard plan the committee and the neighbours will accept.

Most of our customers live in apartments, from Whitefield and Hebbal to Jayanagar and Rajajinagar, and most associations now have Deepavali rules. The smoothest celebrations happen when residents take a clear plan to the committee in September, not on the evening itself.

Start with the rules that already apply. Check the current state government and city notices on permitted hours and types of crackers, then the association’s own rules on where and when. Most societies we work with allow sparklers on balconies, and fountains and small sky shots only in a marked area of the courtyard or on the ground.

Propose a fixed area and a fixed time. A good courtyard area is paved, at least 15 metres from parked cars, gas pipelines and the building walls, and away from trees. Ask for two shared slots, for example 7 to 8 pm for families with small children and 8.30 to 10 pm for fountains and shots. Name two volunteers for each slot with water buckets and sand.

Finally, share the product list. We prepare a printable list of our items with the noise level, burn time and type for each one, which committees in Malleswaram and Sahakara Nagar have circulated to residents. When neighbours can see that every box is green and that there are no bombs or garlands, most objections fall away. Elderly residents and pet owners appreciate knowing the hours in advance, too.
