Do green crackers really work? Five doubts answered

Less bright, damp, expensive, not really green? The questions we hear most, with honest answers.

Every season we get the same doubts about green crackers, usually from someone whose uncle says they are not the real thing. Here are five, answered plainly.

“They are not as bright.” Green sparklers and fountains are a little less smoky, and on a still night that actually makes them look brighter, because the sparks are not lost in a haze. Our 3 m gold flower pot is as tall as the older kind. What you will not find are the very loud items, by design. “They go damp and fail.” Any cracker fails if it is stored badly. Green formulations are not more fragile. Keep boxes in their carton, off the floor, in a dry cupboard, and they hold for a year. Most failures we see come from boxes left on a balcony through a rainy October.

“They are too expensive.” They do cost more box for box, often 15 to 25% more. Many families find they buy fewer items and enjoy them more. A ₹3,000 order is enough for a balcony family of four. “Green is just a label.” It is a different, reduced-emission formulation, and a proper label names the maker, the batch and the formulation. That is why we test every batch ourselves.

“They make no smoke at all.” Not true, and we never claim it. They make less smoke than the older kind. Keep windows closed while the fountains burn, then air the flat.
