Plum cake gelato, strawberry sorbet and a nolen gur kulfi: what we churn for the season, and how to order for the holidays.

December is a special month on Chapel Road. Bandra’s churches put up their cribs, the lanes of Ranwar and Pali village are strung with stars, and our shop stays busy past midnight from the 20th onwards. The menu changes to match.
The first Mahabaleshwar strawberries reach Crawford Market in the second week of December, and our sorbet comes back then. Alongside it we make a Christmas plum cake gelato, with pieces of rum-soaked fruit cake from a small bakery in Pali Naka folded through a cinnamon base. The rum is cooked off before it goes in, so it suits all ages. A nolen gur kulfi, made with date palm jaggery from Bengal, runs for the whole winter for as long as the jaggery lasts.
For Christmas lunch, a party tub of plum cake, strawberry and malted chocolate serves 15 to 20 people. Order by noon on the 23rd for delivery on the 24th; we are closed on the morning of the 25th but open from 4 pm. Orders for New Year’s Eve close on the 30th at noon.
If you are in Bandra over the holidays, walk past the cribs at St Andrew’s and Mount Carmel in the evening, then come to the shop. The plum cake flavour is made only until the first week of January, when the bakery stops baking its Christmas cakes.
